Welcome to the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center

TO BE ANNOUNCED

The Hearin-Chandler Virtual Journey Digital Theater will take you out of this world. Travel from the inside of an atom all the way to the edge of the universe.

Join your Exploreum tour guide for a ride through amazing technology.  The digital theater uses silicon graphics, 3D and virtual reality technology to immerse the audience in the experience of a lifetime.

With a screen the size of an 18-wheeler and 1,000 watts of sound, the Digital Theater will blow you away.

The theater is designed to accommodate a small group on journeys through space and time, all led by your tour guide.

Some of the trips you may experience include:

  • a trip through the solar system, past distant galaxies to the edge of the universe
  • explore the inside of the worlds most amazing machine: the human body
  • soar above tree tops in a prehistoric world full of dinosaurs
  • follow the international space station in real-time orbit around Earth
  • take a walk deep inside a Mummy’s Tomb or through a Roman city
  • go inside the DNA helix to see the human blueprint firsthand

The Exploreum's Digital Theater is a designated SGI® Reality Center powered by an 8-processor SGI® Onyx® visualization system with three SGI® InfiniteReality3 graphics pipes.  The data sets are visualized through the Immersive Theater using three Barco 3D Galaxy DLP projectors that display images on a 120-degree curved screen, 13 feet high by 32 feet long, with a 16-foot radius.

The Exploreum also has the Uniview program, the most feature-rich astronomical visualization and universal data exploration platform in the world.  Digital Universe is the world’s most extensive and accurate 3D atlas of the universe.  The interactive database combines the latest astronomical data provided by scientists from around the globe.  Developed at the American Museum of Natural History and Hayden Planetarium in conjunction with NASA, elements are combined to bring you a view of the observable universe.
